Super Six X-Country

On Wednesday the 27th HNI competed against 6 other schools in Hawkes Bay for X-country. We arrived at Park Island, and walked the course to see where to sprint past someone and also to talk about the course. There were 2 ditches that we had to cross, 1 hill and the course was 3 km long. Both year 8 and 7 do the same distances.
The year 7 girls went first... HNI had a great run and came in 2nd sadly getting beaten by Taradale. It was a great and hard race.
Next came the Year 7 boys... I was in the race and hoped on getting in the top 5. We warmed up and jogged over to the starter line. The race started with a BANG!!
The year 7 boys shot off the starter line. I had a bad start and started off around 30th. I then started to pick up the pace and caught up to top five then ran around the corner. Top 3. Top 2. Ollie Marshall is my biggest competitor as well as Adam Baron. Both are great runners.
I was around 20 metres behind Ollie and caught up to ten. Over the first ditch. Jump! I ran on hearing footsteps behind me. I risked a quick glance and looked back. Seeing Adam behind me made me run even faster. We ran up the hill that's where Adam passed me. "Don't worry" I told myself, " I'll catch him up". I did, I passed him down hill. We jumped the second stream and I kept running passed the finish around to the start. 1 lap to go!
I stayed in front of Adam and gained distance. The finish was nearing and I had almost used all my energy up. The hill upward was tiring. I was closing in on Ollie but he was still around 15 metres in front. Adam was also closing in but I ran away and jumped over the last creek. I was 100 metres away from the finish and slowly closing in on Ollie. 14 metres away from Ollie 13, 12, 11, 10 but it was too late he had crossed the finish and then... So had I. Adam was around 18 metres behind me.
2nd. 2nd! I was exhausted and almost collapsed on my own legs. I congratulated Adam and Ollie and so did they. We talked for a while and all said that, that was a hard race. I sat back down and watched and waited for the year 8 girls to go. Then year 8 boys.
The schools all sat down and all went quite as they waited for the top 3 schools to be announced. Then the Taradale teacher announced 3rd place for the schools. Then 2nd which was HNI we cheered for our school. Then as expected 1st place Taradale.
It was a great race, and HNI did..... SPECTACULAR!!!!

Keith Haring: Inspired Art

Room 12B, in art, have been focusing on Keith Haring. We drew his style of art by rolling a dice and choosing which legs, camera, wolf etc. we should use on our picture. We then wrote a speech about Keith Haring on Chatter Pix, here is mine:

Technology: Cycle Four

On Friday was our first lesson for rotation four. Sadly I wasn't there because I was explaining my science project to the judges. Our group wired circuits together a positive wire and a negative wire. The wires came out of the batteries which formed the circuit. The group also learnt about which lights would be suitable after an earthquake. Here is a photo of the group:

Science Project - HB Science Fair

Last Friday a group of HNI students including me went to EIT to explain our projects to judges. We entered our projects into school to get judged and my one got through. We all did different projects such as apple heat radiation, or smaller funnels lifting bigger objects. My one was about Cape Kidnappers Concretion Creations. so on Friday last week HNI set up their posters and were ready to talk to the judges.
The judges walked into the room and started judging the high schoolers then progressing onto the year eight's. Finally it was the year 7's turn they walked down the aisle finding the projects that they were allocated to.  They asked questions and asked us to talk about our project. One of the questions were for me.... "How did the concretions form?" My answer was.... "Well 400 million years ago underneath the seabed were oil deposits and hydrocarbon gases bubbled through the cracks in the seabed. While doing so the hydrocarbon bubbles deposit calcite around the cracks forming the tube like concretions. Over time tectonic plates lifted the seabed up forming Cape Kidnappers. Then by weathering the concretions fell out of the cliff face and into the sea."
That was 1 of the things that I wanted to find out. I found by asking a geologist called Dr Bue. He explained how the concretions were formed. My other experiments were to replicate and measure how fast the concretions and mudstones found out at Cape Kidnappers were decrease. I used 2 sorts of weathering for my experiment: Physical & Chemical. The judges came back and asked us again about our projects.
Men started to come round stapling pieces of card board to our projects. One went to Oscar's the one next to me then mine then to Hannah's. We all looked at ours and the cardboard had Prize Winner on ours. The judges congratulated us.
I find out what get tomorrow on Thursday. Hopefully I'll do well!

Technology: Cycle Three

For Term 3, third rotation, group K were making and designing key tag. I made a J with an orienteering sign on the other side of it with black triangle on the J. We then progressed onto a SI chip case. My one was a camera the SI chip was stuck into the camera "pretending" to be the lens. Here is my camera that I made and here are the steps we took to make the camera:

Maths; Mathletics

On Tuesday week 2 some year 7's got picked for the Hawkes Bay Mathletics Challenge. The year 7's, first started off with the individual. I tried my very best but did not succeed to get the full mark of 10/10. We then carried on with a team event. I was with Zethan and Dewald. The next part of the challenge was word problems. We did very well and carried on to the quick word problems.  The word problems were very quick to figure out and we caught up on points. We got bronze and did very well. I got 1st for a scale drawing that I did earlier and I also came 1st for my poster which I did about Marmite and Vegemite to see what one families prefer. The experience was very fun and exciting and I really enjoyed the night.
