Kiwi Haiku
Room 10 have created a haiku tunnel poem. We firstly wrote a haiku that showed not told. After that we created a front and a back for the tunnel then made two other slides which slid in between the zigzags on the side. The end product (after colouring in) was a story on a tunnel.

Explanation Writing How Was Mount Everest Formed?
Room 10 have done explanation writing on anything that interested them. I chose Mount Everest because I once saw a documentary about it.
How Was Mount Everest Formed?
- Earthquakes forced the tectonic plates up.
- Tectonic plates pushed Mount Everest up out of the sea when hitting the other country.
- Collision between the countries formed Mount Everest.
- Converging plates.
- Mount Everest is 8,848metres.
- Mount Everest once lay on the sea bed.
- Mount Everest was formed 60 million years ago.
- India plate moved towards the Eurasian plate at a rate of 15 cm per year.
- 7 major plates 1-20 cm per year.
- People climbing the mountain are killed.
How Was Mount Everest Formed?
How did Mount Everest come to be? Mount Everest towers over other mountains along the Himalayas. It was caused by tectonic plates (India and Eurasia plates) colliding 60 million years ago. The two tectonic plates moved at an astonishing rate of 15 cm per year. After several million years they both found each other and slowly pushed one another up out of the ground. The ocean that had once separated the two lands was pushed towards the sky. So at the very top of Mount Everest there are remains of lilypads and sea life.
Tectonic plates are lithosphere (uppermost mantle and crust of the earth). Tectonic plates can vary in size and can be up to a few hundred of thousands of kilometres across and a few hundred kilometres thick. The massive slabs of rock move due to the continental rocks that are much lighter with the lightweight minerals of quartz and feldspar. With the help of the minerals the tectonic plates can move, because of the hot mantle beneath the earth’s crust which drives the plates forward. The plates then can slide along 1-20cm per year (like New Zealand is today). The tectonic plates crawl and collide with other another plate hitting each other straight on and forcing one another up. Usually one plate goes below the other causing earthquakes.
Earthquakes on Mount Everest are very common because of movement beneath the crust. Even though the crust is being pushed up 5-7 cm a year which is causing Mount Everest to rise, earthquakes bring the skyscraper back down to it’s original height. The earthquakes that shake the mountains can create avalanches which kills humans, like the recent one on April the 25th 2015 which has caused Mount Everest to drop 2cm.
Mount Everest is 8,848metres above the sea bed and this skyscraper was once below the seabed at a point in it’s lifetime.
ANZAC Diary Entry
Room 10 have done a diary entry pretending to be a soldier on the 1915 Gallipoli beach. We started it just before or when we arrived on the beach and described what the scenes were like around us.
24th April 1915
We’re drawing near. The captains are leaving clues such as staying in our clothes when going to bed and land on the right. We’ve been playing heaps of card games and those have been entertaining us for the 6 weeks we’ve been on.
25th April 1915
The bullets are whizzing all around. It’s incredible to think that out of everyone who didn’t make it my brother and I did. We’re already on our notebooks hidden underground in a trench.
28th April
I haven’t wrote anything for a while but we’ve been shooting all day everyday and 20 minutes ago I have been asked to go over the hills with a bunch of men and try and kill the Turk’s. I’ve got ready and we are leaving today.
29th April 1915
We’ve exceeded up through the hills and pushed the Turk’s back. The Turks have mowed us down but we’ve holding our position. I’ve stabbed 7 turks so far just wondering how that would feel is horrible. The blade piercing your body and reaching into your heart, the look on their faces are unforgettable. No one really cares about you much it’s more all about what’s happening next where we are at in position and how many troops they had lost. I’ve already been woken up twice in the night from the turks firing another attack of soldiers.
30th April 1915
I’ve survived another day of torture over the night 66 of the ANZAC soldiers have been deceased and it’s only 4 of us left. My brother, commanding officer Jeff and Sam. We’ve been passed by many Turks that haven’t seen us, then shot them in the back. The sun beats down it’s rays of powerful light and my skin is shriveling like a prune. We’ve ran out of water 8 times today and have taken some from the dead Turks. The group back on the shore think that we’re dead.
1st May 1915
Right now we are at one of the Turks camps about 100metres away. There’s around 80 of them and Jeff says we’re going to take them on. We’ve sorted out a plan. I’m going to go high and shoot as many as I can because they’re all in a single area. Then I’m going to stop shooting after 100 shots and my brother, Jeff and Sam are going to come in and kill everyone. It’s a long shot but I hope it works.
I’m out of ammo and there are only 5 left coming for me, my legs are blown off and Jeff, Sam and my brother are trying to catch up to the Turks but they won’t get there in time. This is my last diary entry they’re going to kill me but if i’m going down ones going dow
Inspiring New Zealand Movers and Shakers
Room 10 could all choose what mover and shaker they wanted to do then we had to write a brief description of the selected mover and shaker.
Arthur Lydiard
Jogging Maestro
Arthur Lydiard was born 6th July 1917. He was a running and sport coach for others and he himself ran distant events. He coached top athletes and made them better such as Murray Malberg, Peter Snell and Barry Magee who (at the Rome olympics 1960) were gold medalists. He helped propel New Zealand forward to the top of the world in long and middle running events.
There was a particular training technique he used and that he himself invented. The style of running is called jogging, a set pace so you could go on for a long time and talk to the person beside you. Though many thousands of people had already being doing the technique no one had really done it properly. They may have been slowly building up speed in their running.
Arthur Lydiard was incredible at running himself and after many years of running, decided to pass the information/technique on.
Jogging is used for stamina for athletes competing in long or middle distance running events and is also used for warming down after any sort of run (except jogging). The running technique (jogging) is used by millions of people all over the world.
Arthur Lydiard tested a running progression on himself, which was weeks of strength work. Which included hill running and springing. After six weeks of anaerobic training he realized that the training only needed to be done for 4-6 weeks because of the after affects: mental stress and burnout caused by lower blood pH and H20W.
He was inspiring and was a leader for his country which pushed him forward. At times it was hard for him since he tested his techniques on himself and sometimes the athletes that he trained didn’t get podium, but he kept going because of his country (New Zealand) behind him. He dared to go where not many, go he was an inventor and innovator.
Arthur Lydiard was recognised and named best running coach in the World. He sadly died on December 11th 2004 in Texas on a tour after a suspected heart attack.

ANZAC KWL
Before we started anything on ANZAC we wrote down what we knew and what we wanted to know then we found out the answers to what we wanted to know.
What do I know about Anzac Day and the Anzacs?
|
What do I want to know?
|
What I have learnt
|
ANZAC stand for Australian New Zealand Army Corps.
ANZAC day represents the time to remember the people who are dead and who served their lives to help the ones that are alive and here today.
ANZAC day is also the day when the first world war started.
The Anzacs were the name of what the people in charge called the New Zealanders and Australians to show where they are and how far in they have gone.
|
I want know why they signed up after hearing that many men and woman had died in Gallipoli.
I would also like to know why any of them signed up at all because it’s basically saying here is a death certificate.
Who wrote the famous poem… poppies grow rows on rows. Why is the dawn service so early? What sort of guns did the soldiers use? What countries were the turks attacking? Why did the turks attack Australia?
|
That ANZAC biscuits were not sent to Gallipoli. The ANZAC biscuits that did go to war later on in 1917 etc. were used for bread instead of ANZAC biscuits. People signed up because they wanted an adventure and though they wouldn’t get killed.
John McCrae wrote the famous poem, in Flanders field.
The dawn service is early because that’s when the ANZAC soldiers landed on the beach of Gallipoli.
The soldiers used rifles, machine guns and gas.
The turks attacked all the allied forces.

NYLD Palmerston North
NYLD (National Young Leaders Day) was held for young leaders in Palmerston North.
46 of us loaded onto a fancy bus ready for the spell binding experience at 6:30am. We quickly sorted out our seats and waited the whole 3 hours chatting away busily talking about our previous experiences of NYLD.
We soon arrived at our destination waiting intently, then scrambled out onto the pavement almost in orderly fashion. We walked as a sea of green into the entrance moving the different colours of students apart. Soon we all sat down in our chosen seats and waited for the show to begin which took 3 minutes.
The lights dimmed down to nothing and then a 3-D circle hanging from the roof lit up in bright green. "Oooos" and "Ahhhhs" came from the crowd as the light show began. Then a voice boomed over the crowd - "welcome to the NYLD!" Then several spotlights focused on the hosts walking onto the stage.
In total we had 8 magnificent speakers who shared their stories and abilities with us. They all talked about their challenges and how they overcome them or used their strengths or non strengths to become one of the best.
While the show was being held everyone were taking some notes about ways to become a better leader. Here are the notes that I wrote down:
Make the most of everything and failing is alright
Don't make any excuses
Don't let fear and doubt get in the way of your dreams and goals.
Pick yourself up and have the courage to do it.
It takes a lot of hard work to do it.

You don't have to know what you want to do yet.
Take every opportunity to figure out what you want to do.
What is it that you want to get across to others.
I asked Jaime Mc dell What does it feel like to walk somewhere and hear your music.

NYLD was incredible and an unbelievably must see experience and show. It topped any of the other years that I've been. They had great enthusiasm, speakers and co-operation with the audience. I learnt so much from the experience and was mind blown by how much they try to overcome their obstacles and their commitment. NYLD will inspire other young leaders or non, because everyone is a leader. The speaker that stood out for me was Marcus Winter. He was incredible and I learnt a lot from him such as, make your mountains, find your flow and grow your support. NYLD is a fun event for everyone and everyone will learn a lot about leadership and challenges.

Tekoteko Art
Today Room 10 made Tekotekos a Maori figure carved out of wood & pumice. We drew ours on a piece of paper using vivid, pencil and another colour. We made the thighs strong and made the Tekoteko symmetrical apart from the tongue and the weapon.

Matahiwi Marae
On the 22nd of June the year eights all went to Matahiwi Marae and learnt a lot more about how the Maori acted and what they did. After visiting we then recorded information about what we learnt:

Something that I would have liked to have known was: Why were dead people not allowed in the door of the wharenui if there was a woman on top?
- That Maui had four brothers and he hated them.
- That only babies are allowed to eat in the wharenui.
- If above the entrance to the Wharenui was a girl and the marae was under attack any boy going out of the entrance would have to be blessed before he could go and fight, but by then it might be too late.
Something that impressed me was: The carvings and weaving because everything told a different story, and also how the stories were told and remembered.
Something that I would have liked to have known was: Why were dead people not allowed in the door of the wharenui if there was a woman on top?

Treemendous Panel Design
Room 10 all made different panel designs and then voted on the best one. The panel designs go out into the Treemendous garden when finished.
Come To Treemendous
Room 10 made videos/images and other forms of craft to get people and their family to come to the Treemendous days on Saturday. I made mine in 3-D.
ANZAC Art
Room 10 have been doing art on ANZAC about an image of War. We then had to describe what the art was about.
In Memory Of Poppy
Poppy was a name of a soldier and is the name of the flowers that represents ANZAC. My piece of art shows that many people died and that WAR will never end.
Tagul - War
Room 10 have been doing things to do with WW1 and WW2. I have created a Tagul which uses words I think ANZAC soldiers thought about when fighting in the War. The tagul symbol that I chose was a cross, to represent the crosses of the dead.
