Theorem Of Pythagoras

In extension maths we learnt about Pythagoras and his theorem. We had to show our thinking explaining the theorem of Pythagoras and answer the questions below. We also had to make a diagram explaining the theorem of Pythagoras.
The Theorem of Pythagoras
Walt:  understand the theorem of Pythagoras and show our thinking.
What is a ‘theorem’?
In mathematics it is a rule expressed by symbols or formulas. It is also a system of ideas attempted to explain something.
Who was Pythagoras?
Pythagoras of Samos was an Ionian Greek philosopher he was also a mathematician and discovered the religious movement called Pythagoreanism.
What did he do for a job?
Pythagoras worked as a mathematician and had a school named the semicircle. Not only did he teach maths but Pythagoras also was one of the most distinguished teachers of religion in ancient Greece.
Why did he do that?
Pythagoras was influenced by Thales, Pherekydes and Anaximander to a great extent. Thales made the biggest impact on him and contributed to Pythagoras’s interests in astronomy and mathematics.
What was his claim to fame?
Pythagoras had lots of work although most of it was lost and destroyed over time. Pythagoras was famous because of his well known theory today but was well know back in his time because he was an excellent mathematician and priest.
What is the importance of his theorem?
well k Pythagoras’s theorem can be used for many different things and is important because it saves time and money.
Explain where it can be used.
Pythagoras’s theorem is used in many different places and in many different ways such as painting, concrete pouring, architecture, how high a ladder has to go on a wall at a possible angle, pyramids, cranes, races, maths, hills, fishing and buildings.

Cyber Bullying Slogan

We created a cyber bullying slogan that bullies can and will remember when they are bullying someone. We made it catchy so it would be imprinted into their head.

Back To Front Poem

For writing we wrote a back to front poem. A back to front poem is a poem that you can read top to bottom and bottom to top. On the way down it can either be negative or positive and also on the way up.
ART
Art is a despicable work!
Everyone will disagree that
it’s a glorious way to show and express things and
it captures images in time with colours,
that’s an imprecise bit of information!
It’s messy and chaotic,
nothing can be understood of it.
It’s poison on a page!
What’s majestic about it?
It’s a revolting skill to have.
Why would you say?
It’s amazing how the human imagination works,
it’s repulsing what they do with their hands!
Don’t you ever tell me
art is essential!

Flag Debate

As you all probably know the New Zealand flag might be changed. So for writing today we wrote about our opinions of someone changing or not changing the flag. I chose how someone shouldn't change the flag and gave reasons why.

Flag Debate
  • It’s a waste of money (it could be spent on better things).
  • We would have to change all the uniforms etc.
  • History would change like ANZAC.
  • 26m is just the starting money (it will end up to be a lot more).
  • Kids can design it.
  • John Key wants to make a mark in history.
  • There won’t be confusion between NZ and Australia.
  • The new flag represent NZ in a more unique way so we stand out.
  • Around 50m will be spent.
  • The flag will become more modern.
  • Some people aren't taking it seriously.
  • After the vote most of NZers might not agree.
  • We shouldn’t change it if there’s no need.
  • Will make NZ stand out from other flags.
  • NZers won’t want to change it.

Don’t You Dare!
I am writing this to persuade you that changing the flag is a disgraceful choice to this country. Your decision will be the very vote that burns the old flag to the ground. I am shocked by your vile decision to change such a beautiful part of our history. The flag has been flown many times for our country and it is horrid that you would deny a history that so many New Zealanders fought under.

Your abominable decision should be outcast from the voting. The dreadfulness is inexcusable and to even think of changing the precious flag would be an atrocious decision. I am truly and utterly revolted at your choice and know you will change.

The 26 million dollars shall be spent elsewhere instead of the nauseating effort of CHANGING the incredible flag that we (Kiwi’s) identify as home.

The alluring flag has so much uniqueness and to change it to a disastrous shoddy flag is abominable. Therefore I am trying to tell you that your decision (which is shocking) will be a shameful decision to this country. This flag that stands tall and proud will never fall. You will change and you will LET IT FLY!

Room 10 Technology Challenge

Room 10 did a technology challenge to choose who went into the year 8 Havelock North Intermediate technology challenge. In my Group was Raymond and Teva. As you can see in the photo we were making a design that could propel a ping pong ball in the air for as long as possible only using the force of the rubber bands. Our equipment we could use was: 4 ice cream sticks, 2 rubber bands, sellotape, 4 pieces of paper, 2 paper clips, 1 ping pong ball, 4 straws and 1 card. Our time was .95 seconds. Together we walked well and had a good design.

Technology Challenge

Jamie and I were selected to go against other year 8 classes in the school to represent room 10. We had to make a structure as tall as possible and suspend a pink bar as far out as possible from the structure. The only materials we could use was 30 straws a roll of sellotape and 2 meters of string. The structure could not be sellotaped to the ground. We made a design using triangles (the strongest shape). We came 3rd overall but had a great time.

Further Art

At the start of the year we created art using magazines about what we wanted to do or achieve. I chose the word Further. Around the outside of the magazines we cut letters out explaining what the word means.

Zentangle Art

In class for our art curriculum we have been drawing and designing a fun piece of zentangled art. Zentangled art should be fun and easy to do. You just draw a bunch of lines through a paper and then fill in the gaps with multiple patterns. Such as circles, zig zags, shapes and patterns. I made my zentangle into a cube and then filled in the rest of the shape.
