Inside Integers
Walt: understand how integers work in the context of real life maths.
Your task is to find at least 10 different examples of integers in the real world.
You will need to present your findings digitally so that others can learn from your findings.
Part of your work will be explaining how these integers work and how they can affect you.
Take on board a challenge so that you find something that is unique, diverse and not well known at all. You will need to really understand how it works then.
Due Friday this week.
1. If you were in egypt taking a tour guide and someone asked you what time you were in you would say -2500bc because it’s 2500 years before the death of christ and that’s why it’s 2015 today because we’re +2015.
2. When a plane is taking off it is going into the positives and when the plane is coming down it goes back down into the negatives, because it is descending from where it had previously begun. You have to tell the airlines how high you are off the ground so they can make sure no other planes are going to be flying at the same height.
3. If you gambull then you might be positive $600 or you might be negative $30.
4. You could be in the 100m race beating Usain Bolt and had beaten his time by positive 162 milliseconds. Most likely Usain Bolt would be winning and you would be 2.65 seconds off his time, meaning that you would be negative 265 milliseconds and lost.
5. You could be on top of the world/mount everest (8,848 metres) and want to know how far it is to the top to see if you have enough air in your tank left. Or you could be going from the new record in the Mariana Trench (10,994 metres) and be reporting back to the people/news reporters up top.
6. You could be getting paid money for your job and be in savings (positive) or you could be in debt and owe money to the bank which would mean that you're in the negative.
7. If you are a cop and are pulling people over to see if they have drunk too much then you would need to know if they have had a positive cocaine in the blood or no cocaine and they would be negative.
8. You might have high blood pressure and be in the positives. Or low blood pressure and in the negatives. So you might have negative 23 and have low blood pressure or positive blood pressure and have positive 15
9. Maybe you’ve been having too much dessert and you might be overweight by 3kg - positive. Or you might be having no dinner and be in the - negative.
10. You might be driving along and be 15 km over the speed limit which is positive. Or you might be in a traffic jam and be going 75 km below the speed limit which is negative.
