Inspiring New Zealand Movers and Shakers

Room 10 could all choose what mover and shaker they wanted to do then we had to write a brief description of the selected mover and shaker.

Arthur Lydiard
Jogging Maestro

Arthur Lydiard was born 6th July 1917. He was a running and sport coach for others and he himself ran distant events. He coached top athletes and made them better such as Murray Malberg, Peter Snell and Barry Magee who (at the Rome olympics 1960) were gold medalists. He helped propel New Zealand forward to the top of the world in long and middle running events.
There was a particular training technique he used and that he himself invented. The style of running is called jogging, a set pace so you could go on for a long time and talk to the person beside you. Though many thousands of people had already being doing the technique no one had really done it properly. They may have been slowly building up speed in their running.
Arthur Lydiard was incredible at running himself and after many years of running, decided to pass the information/technique on.
Jogging is used for stamina for athletes competing in long or middle distance running events and is also used for warming down after any sort of run (except jogging). The running technique (jogging) is used by millions of people all over the world.
Arthur Lydiard tested a running progression on himself, which was weeks of strength work. Which included hill running and springing. After six weeks of anaerobic training he realized that the training only needed to be done for 4-6 weeks because of the after affects: mental stress and burnout caused by lower blood pH and H20W.
He was inspiring and was a leader for his country which pushed him forward. At times it was hard for him since he tested his techniques on himself and sometimes the athletes that he trained didn’t get podium, but he kept going because of his country (New Zealand) behind him. He dared to go where not many, go he was an inventor and innovator.
Arthur Lydiard was recognised and named best running coach in the World. He sadly died on December 11th 2004 in Texas on a tour after a suspected heart attack.
